I already have one post about gametags, well here goes another one. Nintendo may never get their act together and get gamertags for their online service but it looks like Sony is. While showing off their games at the last convention they attended they accidentally showed a gamescreen in which gamertags were mentioned. Immediately after showing this page the man controlling the PS3 said “Opps, your not supposed to see that” SO this almost guarantees gamertags are heading to the PS3.

So the Playstation 3 will have gamertags, will gamertags be a solitary feature or will the PS3 get the whole Xbox Live experience? Sony has long talked up it’s free online service but hasn’t really delivered as expected, sure you can go online and play games but gamers want just a bit more.

I think Sony’s online gameplay will include all or at least most of the features that Xbox Live does thus proving that Microsoft’s fee for such a service is uncalled for. Although, Sony could always charge for their gamertag service it doesn’t look very likely that they will. Afterall, Sony has repeated attacked the price for Xbox Live.

So what is the conclusion here? The conclusion is Sony will have an Xbox Live like online service that will most likely be free of charge. This will entice people to buy the PS3 over the Xbox 360 and prove what we have known, the price for the Xbox Live service is not needed.

A DVD Playing Wii

August 23rd, 2007 1 Comment

The rumor of a DVD Wii just won’t die and for good reason. After all if the Gamecube came out with a DVD playing version then why can’t the Wii. I find it even more likely for the Wii to be able to play DVDs since it uses the same media format. As a modchip proved to us, playing DVDs on the Wii is as simple as changing the firmware on the DVD drive and as Nintendo has said before this is possible.

I’m sure your dieing to know what modchip actually was able to turn the Wii into a DVD playing game device. Well, the answer is any modchip along with the new software by Symbiote.org. This software is currently free but as with all free things it comes with a price. You will have to risk the safety of your beloved Wii by installing a modchip. Well I guess it’s not that bad but I’d still like to wait and see when/if Nintendo releases it’s DVD playing firmware update.

Wait, so the Wii will be DVD-Movie capable? Well, the hardware is already there, it’s just a matter of time before Nintendo delivers on there promise and releases the software that will enable the Wii to function as a DVD-Movie player. When will this happen is the big question here. We all know just how long it takes Nintendo to do anything it’s fans want. My guess is for the not too distant future, but I could be wrong you know.

Conclusion:
The Nintendo Wii is capable of DVD-Movie playback the only thing holding it back is the Nintendo Wii’s Firmware. Even though Nintendo promised a DVD player for the Wii they has yet to uphold it and when they do it could be a long time from now.
